Oma’s Bnr. 549 M/S «Trym» delivered to Norled AS

HYBRID BATTERY-ELECTRIC FAST FERRY COMBI CATAMARAN WITH SPACE FOR A 22 TON TRAILER AND WITH CAPACITY FOR 72 PASSENGERS:

Oma Baatbyggeri AS, in Stord, delivered its new build number 549 M/S «Trym» to Norled AS on Wednesday 21 June 2023. Oma Baatbyggeri AS and Norled AS signed the contract for two 30-meter cargo/passenger catamarans in January 2022. The sister ship M/S «Frey» was delivered to Norled AS in January 2023.

The boats are hybrid battery-electric fastferries that will operate in route package 2, the local routes in the former «Sogn og Fjordane» county. In this connection, Vestland County Council and Skyss have taken the lead when it comes to environmental requirements for fast ferries, with the aim of both cutting greenhouse gas emissions and stimulating innovation.

The design is based on Oma’s combi catamaran concept, of which the boatbuilder has built and delivered many, all the way back to 2001 and which sail along the Norwegian coast. The vessels have the capacity to transport a bus/trailer of 22 tonnes, alternatively 7 passenger cars in combination with 72 passengers.

The two catamarans join a series of vessels delivered from Oma Baatbyggeri to Norled, the owner and operator of the vessels.

Both vessels are delivered with hybrid battery-electric propulsion systems. In contrast to previously delivered vessels with conventional propulsion systems. This means that the vessels can operate with zero emissions of CO2 and 100% electric operation in most of the routes where they will operate.

The catamarans are built in seawater-resistant aluminium, a building material that is 100% recyclable. The strong but light construction material is optimal when building fast ferries and copes well with an axle pressure of 12 tonnes on the stern deck. As the vessels are light, they are equipped with ballast tanks to balance the weights when loading/unloading heavy lorries.

In addition to the large car deck, the vessel has a crane and a cargo hold. The passenger capacity is 72, service speed is 22 knots, and the length of the vessel is 30 metres.
